Church of Caplan

Caplan ( Gaspésie )

When the Deportation of the Acadians took place in 1774, refugees settled at the mouth of the Bonaventure river. In 1812, Jean Ambroise and Pierre Babin settled farther in the west, at the Caplan River. Gradually, the population increased and, in order to remedy the situation of religious services scattered all over a very large territory, the parish was founded in 1872.

The church was built in 1927-28 upon plans prepared by architects Pierre Lévesque and Maurice Manguy. The building has a latine cross shape with a protruding chancel anda flat chevet. The vault, made of plaster, follows a depressed archway. Experior walls are covered with rroughcast.
