Church of Pabos

Pabos ( Gaspésie )

Church Notre-Dame de Lourdes de Sainte-Adélaïde-de-Pabos

In 1860, we organized the first parish in the Gaspé in even the most populous missions. St. Adelaide de Pabos is one of the fourteen parishes canonically erected in March 1860 and civilly in January 1861. Will then follow the erection of a first church, a parsonage and a cemetery first. As building stone was then rare in Gaspésie, the first church was then built with the help of a material then being in large quantities: wood.

Its architecture simple, but very elegant, well-characterized this church most places of worship of Gaspe villages of that time. In addition, it was not oriented in the same manner as that will be built in 1954, she was facing east, not facing the sea It was further east, about 20 meters the current location of the church.

Later, around the 50, two will bring the Abbot Paul-Émile Lamarre wanting to build a new church: there is first the desire to reduce, if not to eliminate fire hazards and, second, lower costs building stone.

As for the rectory, it was already in the 20s. Of course, it has undergone over the years some major modifications. On the other hand, the cemetery is now located further north on Church Street, was at the time opposite the church. The move took place around 1948 and by the lack of space.
