The distinctiveness of this park lies in the fact that it is situated in the heart of the downtown area, and has a 33-metre-high waterfall a sits main attraction. Riviere-du-Loup was one of the first towns in Lower-Saint-Lawrence to produce electricity, which was, at the time, an important economic activity. With the goal of making you discover the history of the development of the city’s hydroelectric operation, a few explanatory plaques have been installed throughout the site. Not only will you have the opportunity to learn about the secrets of hydroelectricity, but also a chance to learn more, thanks to notes on geological features particular to the site as well as information about the importance of the industrial hydroelectric heritage.
Near the great falls, there is an old hydroelectric power station that was also restored when the park installations were carried out. This power station now generates electricity, which is then sold to Hydro-Quebec. It is the Hydro Algonquin Power Systems Corporation Incorporated that operates the power station.
The Falls Park also has pedestrian trails that invite discovery. Two bridges allow you to cross both sides of “Wolf River”. One issituated below the falls, while the other one, which is over the falls, allow you to have a bird’s eye view of the 33-metre-high falls.
