The Matane Salmon Observation Centre

Matane ( Gaspésie )

Experience the migration odyssey of the Atlantic salmon. The wild Atlantic salmon has always captivated the human imagination, as it is a symbol of strength, fighting spirit and nobility.

The Matane Salmon Observation Centre (fish ladder) reveals an important phase in the life of the Atlantic salmon: its return to the river. Discover the fascinating characteristics of this fish in a friendly atmosphere. The Atlantic salmon develops in both freshwater and saltwater habitats. When it returns to spawn, it works its way upstream against the river current. The fish ladder contains two glass sections, which are excellent observation areas. Complementing your visit is an exhibit of photographs and artefacts relating the history of the Matane River and its dams from 1865 to the present day. The river is renowned for its salmon fishing.

The Matane Salmon Observation Centre is the official registration site for your salmon catches. You can also purchase your daily permit, fishing licence and membership card here. Fishing tackle is also available for rent. Finally, you can sign up for lessons on angling techniques, making the Matane River a great place to learn how to fish.
