Church Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies

Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies ( Chaudière-Appalaches )

The St. Roch seigneury was granted on April 1st, 1656 by Sieur de Lauzon to Nicolas Juchereau de Saint-Denis. On June 24, 1717, the seigneur, madam de St. Denis, gave a piece of land for the construction of a chapel. Settlers were served by travelling missionnaries. It is quite certain that the chapel was burnt down and/or partially destroyed at the time of the Conquest in 1759.

Early in 1773, the parish priest of St. Anne-de-la-Pocatière, Rev. Pierre-Antoine Porlier, who was responsible to serve the settlers, wrote to Bishop Jean-Olivier Briand, of Québec, to be allowed to enlarge the church. The bishop granted his permission on June 27, 1773. The church was completed in 1777 and the first permanent parish priest was appointed, Rev. H-Pierre Huet de la Valinière.

The construction of a new church, based on plans prepared by architect Pierre Gauvreau, was completed in 1853 at the cost of 28 400$. It was blessed on October 28, 1852. The building is rectangular with a protruding chancel and a semi-circular apse. The wooden vault has the shape of a semi-circular arch. Exterior walls are covered with stone.
